"Visitors and Residents" by Dr. White

As a result in watching "Visitors and Residents" by Dr. White, I would say that I am cross between both a visitor and resident, but more so, a visitor. One of the main reasons why I am a visitor in the web world is because I am definitely concerned with privacy. With all the negative things that happen with networking on the Internet, I definitely do not want to be a victim. Therefore, I refrain from having a multitude of personal networks.  Dr. White mentioned that visitors see social media as a tool to extend relationships with pre-existing friends or family which is important to me than using social media to make friends as some web users do. I definitely can say that I use the Internet on need basis. As Dr. White puts it the web for visitors is like a "collection of tools". One would have to "rummage for the right tool."

I see myself using the Internet as a resident than a visitor in the future for educational purposes.  Now that I have created a number of Personal Learning Networks for this class, I am trying to get use to the idea of creating a social presence or space and also trying to get use to using these beneficial tools for education. As Dr. White states, " It's not about academic of technical skills, it's about culture and motivation." We live during a time where technology is used on a daily basis. Imagine what technology will look like in the next century and how it will impact education.

Are Grades Necessary for Learning?

If grades were taken out of the equation, I think that students will benefit and learn more because the focus is not so much on getting a letter grade but much rather focused on the learning itself. As stated in the video, Pink mentions how grading for performance is the focus in schools these days as opposed to grading for meeting the learning goals. We live in a society where so much emphasis is based on grades. Whether it be applying for a job or to college, usually grades determine decisions. I never even realized how much of an impact learning will be if grades were taken out of the equation.
